A Memphis police dog named Gunner is recovering from multiple stab wounds he suffered while chasing down a burglary suspect. The suspect, meanwhile, and an accused accomplice are in jail charged with burglary and other crimes.
Gunner, a 5-year-old German Shepherd Dog, was stabbed at least 10 times when police responded to a burglary call at a pizza restaurant. The restaurant’s owners told police they struggled with two men caught carrying a large-screen TV from the business about 2 a.m. Wednesday.
Police say Gunner chased down one of the suspects and held on to him despite being stabbed and slashed. Gunner was reported to be recovering from his wounds today and was expected to be OK.
Authorities charged 32-year old Thaddeus Bush and 29-year-old Kenneth Hayes with burglary, assault and resisting arrest. Hayes also was charged with trying to kill an animal and with unlawful possession of a weapon.
