Most Loved Canine Film Characters Revealed

UK Dog News

New research from Direct Line Pet Insurance reveals the nation’s soft spot for dogs on film, with rom-com classic ‘Marley and Me’ stealing the top spot for the best dog movie. The Golden Retriever star Marley was also voted top dog for Britain’s favourite cinematic canine.

Direct Line’s study also revealed that one in eight (13 per cent) pet owners have named their pet dog after a movie star or character, with Tinker Bell, Simba, Disney and Django amongst some of the most common names inspired by the big screen.

Hooch from 80’s classic ‘Turner and Hooch’, Lassie and last year’s top dog Scooby Doo, were also popular contenders for the nation’s most loved furry film star.

Disney classics ‘101 Dalmatians’ and ‘Lady and the Tramp’ were the joint second most favoured dog film, with ‘K9’ and ‘Homeward Bound’ taking joint third place.

Edward Barclay, head of pet insurance, Direct Line, commented: “Animals have been stealing our hearts on the big screen for years, with many of the classic films and characters really standing the test of time. Our research shows that many animal lovers have been inspired by Hollywood when naming their pets, from classics like Bonnie or Tinker Bell to more modern names like Django and Lilo.”

Direct Line is currently offering new customers an introductory 15% discount on pet insurance when purchased online before 15th April 2014. Also, if you take out a Direct Line pet insurance policy online before 31st March 2014 customers will be offered their choice of a free gift, including a Direct Line Take Two Cinema Card offering ‘2 for 1’ cinema entry for 12 months.

Edward Barclay continues: “We want to support pet owners in giving their animals the best possible care they can, as in some cases this can be very costly. We’re calling on all pet owners to act now and make sure their pet is covered and also take advantage of the great discounts and rewards on offer.”

Direct Line pet insurance customers also benefit from a 15% multipet discount when insuring more than one dog or cat on a policy.
