Jailed for life

Why does it not actually mean life?

Just heard the step-father of Baby-P got jailed for 12 years with a minimum that he serve 10 years. Why?

This guy was found guilty of raping a baby. Raping a f****g baby!

Why is the sentence not much, much more simple (and apt). You will be sentenced to prison where you will stay until you die.

Why?

I am really all for reforming criminals where they can be reintegrated to society and contribute positively. But some crimes really ought to carry a ‘prison until you die’ tariff. I’d suggest THIS is one of those crimes.

Prison should be a punishment. Knowing that you will NEVER be released takes away all hope from the punished. Saying ‘minimum of 10 years’ gives much encouragement.
