Amber is now a fairly well adjusted dog with a panchant for cat and rabbit poo and having zoomies at 9pm every evening! Anyway, enough of that!
She is scared of other dogs!
Her experiences with most dogs we’ve come across on walks have not been very good. Alot are boistrous, alot just want to play but she doesn’t seem to know how!
I know this stems from not being very well socialised whilst a pup and we did try, but we found that some other dog owners didn’t want to know. Only on the odd occasion have we come across someone who themselves we’re training a pup and wanted to socialise theirs too.
When we went to training classes, she seemed ok, but then again, didn’t really get to play an awful lot with them.
When we’re out on a favourite walk (Elvaston Castle) she’s now at the point where she’s mostly off lead, she’s very good, comes back when called and doesn’t go running up and hasselling (sp) other dogs. If a dog comes up to her and she’s on lead she will tentatively sniff their snout, never the rear then she’ll turn and cower behind myself or the OH. Off lead she is much the same but will then run towards one of us and try and put us between her and the other dog.
Just the Sunday just gone, we arrived at Elvaston Castle to find a large group of Great Danes and their owners (Clara, were you there??). All was well for a while until she got mobbed by two playful Danes and one literally pushed her over with his paw!
She started yelping, tho not hurt, and the OH picked her up so she could get away (he got headbutted by one Dane in the process!).
I can understand from Ambers point of view that these we’re very big dogs compared to her and i’d have been scared too.
How can we overcome this? We’d love Amber to be able to play and chase with the dogs of other willing owners but also to be able to have a good sniff and greet without being terrified!
