I have a border collie, he naturally wants to round things up, it has been bred into his nature. Some border collies have a strong desire to round up, others don't. Staffies were bred to fight, that is not their fault, nor is it their owners fault. Those with a strong tendancy cannot always be spotted.
I have been a dog owner all my life, last year a staffy attacked my dog for no reason. It went for my dogs neck, it was near impossible to pull him off, I eventually did and I was bitten very badly. I do not blame the owner, she was as shocked as I was.
The problem is many dogs get into the odd scuffel, they are animals. But a staffy on attack is a killer.

Please please please wake up !!!

The idealistic thoughts of banning a breed of fantastic dogs is obserd aswell as farcical, i will put a question to anyone that would like to see a so called murderous dog to its end. It is plain to see that all animals are unpredictable, that is why they are animals. I would expect more horses cause permenant damage to humans than staffs, i would say that there are more attacks on humans by smaller breeds of dogs and i know for a fact that german shepards bite more humans (be it children or adults) than staffs do.
Lets face the facts, George the hateable MP that made not only a fool of himself but of the floundering govourment on im a waste of time TV is rather renound for his very opinionated statements that are in laymens terms a load of S***e !!!. Lets face it, would you vote for a man that plays the masses for votes when he is trying to get into some hasbeens knickers by acting as a cat ? CAT the man is an over educated PUSSY with some very strange views!!!
I own a staffordshire bullterrier that is now three years old and the killer or devil dog as her breed is known as has never even growled at a human, infact you are more at risk being licked to death.
To put a finer point to some idiot that thinks smaller dogs are at risk because of this breed, is utter nonesense !! a spaniel, chowchow whatever, yorkshire terrier and a standard poodle have all attacked my dog !!!
I was told by the poodle owner that her dog attacking mine was due to the fact that i put mine on a lead!!! Work that one out? the reason that her dog attacked mine was due to the fact that she had no control of her dog that would not come back to her, my dog did when i saw that she had no control over her own dog. Had i not put my dog on a lead and there had been a fight what dog do you think would get the blame, Standard pooldle that in most cases are snappy or my staff that is described as a killer, devil dog (to wich the sun always shows a picture of a pitbull rather than a staff).
There are too many irresponsible owners of all animals, dogs, cats, horses ect!! The main problem at the moment is that because of a fashion statement IE ive got a massive dog mate!!!! the stafford is being crusified.
10 years ago it was Rotties, before that is was german shepards. What next ? if Paris hilton turns up with an agressive gerbal will he want to ban them or will he be on his hands and knees again trying to be a pussy, oops sorry a cat??????
I am in full agreement that there are too many people that have a potentialy dangerous dog that could inflict damage, i am also aware that there are far too many people trying to earn money out of buying a status symbol.
Only this week have i found out that my loving and very much caring three year old bitch my have a form of epilepsy !!! how do i feel, to be honest i cried like a baby. (this is due to an irrisponsiblity by a so called breeder!!!)
I think that a prolonged dog training course should be implemented for people that would like to own a breed of dog that is so called DANGEROUS!!!!!! prior to being allowed a licence that enables them to have one.
Obviously this is not fair for those of us that own / breed and enjoy staffords responsibly but it may stop uncontrolled breeding hence the let up of poor puppies / dogs ending up in kennels and eventially being destroyed.
If you honestly love the breed and would like to own one then this is a very small ask!!!
There are still pitbull terriers walking out streets, they are still breeding them ????
Wake up and smell the coffee George and try to think with your head not your nuts!!!!

I own a staf of 9 months and she is the most loving adorable little thing ever. all she wants is love and attention. she adores anybody or dog that will play with her and has never gone for anyone or another dog. in fact she hates shouting and arguing and would rather hide than get involved!
with her flat face she may look like a mean dog but you havent met any dog better!

I have just walked back from the park and called the police as I and my three well trained, quiet dogs (two spaniels and a jr cross) were set upon by two staffies. One of the two young men with them screamed at me to go away because his (male) dog would kill mine. The male dog was terrifying, and I called the police because I believed I was about to be seriously injured trying to save my dogs.
Sadly this isn't the first time I've been forced to move away from this breed whilst out innocently walking my dogs. I have yet to come across a staffie which does not have issues with other dogs, whatever its background.
They are DANGEROUS and SHOULD be banned.
How many more lives must be lost or changed because of them?

staffies should definatley not be banned, they are the most caring and affectionate dog breed. if they are taught to be violent they will be, if you teach any dog to violent its will be, just because this breed are very strong and poweful, other animal owners immediatley think its the staffs fault. in fact, my dog has been attacked so many times by little boistrouse dogs, and he has never retaliated. if your dog is under control then there would never be any problems. lisa, dont judge the dog by its appearance, give it a chance and you'll see they ARE brilliant pets!!

I have two dogs one of which is a staffordshire bull terrier and she is the best dog anyone could wish for. She is fantastic with other dogs and is fine with children. My husband has been bitten by a jack russell (which are known to nip) and a lab does this mean they should be banned? NO!

Enough is enough. These two reports are about deaths, there are hundreds more reports about attacks but do not make headline news.

I think they should be banned as the breed type of these dogs do cause problems. Dogs are NOT people so do not compare blood lines! When a breed of dog has the capability of attacking and killing, it should banned.

i agree with the last 2 comments. i work in a veterinary surgery and we se FAR MORE agressive yorkshire terriers and jack russels than we do staffs! to be honest i dont think i have ever seen a nice jack russel or yorkshire terrier so in that case, I think we should ban those breeds of dog before we even consider the bull terriers!?

i have a staff x springer that is the most adorable dog. We have many clients with staffs too and they are often more affectinate than alot of labradors or collies!

The increase in staffs in rescue homes it probably because of recent trends. Alot of 'chavs' or 'townies' have staffs or other bull terriers as a fashion accesory. Some may be trained to be aggressive but you could also train dachsunds or rerievers to be aggressive so the ban would seem pointless.

This is appaling. Years ago it was Pit Bull's with this stigma attached to them. Now it's Staffordshires. At the end of the day, you can ban them, but then there is going to be a new 'Number One Dangerous Dog' breed and within 50 years, people won't be able to own dogs at all.

As a breed, Staffordshires are fantastic pets. Loveable, fantastic with children. The only problem with them is that they look 'tough'. So irresponsable owners are training them to be vicious.

I have never heard of someone crying out for poodles or yorkshire terriers to be banned. And just last year local to me, two poodles escaped from a back garden and savaged a little boy who was out playing. Did the breed as a whole get critisised? No.

There are far worse problems in this country that people should be worrying about. If the government is concerned about the breed, start a programme for owners to teach them how to train and respect the breed properly instead of wasting time and tax payers money on banning a breed that, as a whole, doesn't deserve it.
