Earlier this evening BBC’s ‘The One Show’ featured an item on dangerous dogs in the UK
Watch it here
The item was generally critical of the Dangerous Dogs Act.
However the programme’s main presenter Adrian Chiles made an ignorant remark about pit bulls which tended to suggest he hadn’t actually listened or observed what had been discussed in the item itself or indeed the very words of the show’s own correspondent just seconds earlier, namely that ‘all dogs are one species’.
I made the case in the programme for a change to the Dangerous Dogs Act and a move away from the concept of legislating against the breed.
The general gist of the piece is that there is pretty much only one person who still thinks the Dangerous Dogs Act in its current form is actually any good - unsurprisingly that is the man who brought it in in the first place, Ken Baker.
The piece [...]

My dogs are defined by doors.
I worked it out today. The way each of them deals with doors is pretty much the summing up of their individual personalities. It really is as neat and tidy as that.
Here is Chloe. She’s 9, a working-bred Labrador Retriever.
She is, as the image might suggest, a peace loving Labrador. A Labra-hippie. She is a gentle soul who tends to go out of her way to avoid conflict, to avoid any trouble and to steer clear of doing anything likely to provoke a negative reaction in people or other dogs. She is kindly in her nature and her control of non confrontational body language is masterful. She could take the sting out of wasp’s tail and sit down with it for a tea party, she’s that good of a diplomat.
Chloe’s treatment of doors: In all her years I have never seen Chloe ‘barge’ a door, [...]

Twenty eight years after councils were required to deal with stray dogs in accordance with the Environmental Protection Act 1990, it seems that a number of councils continue to use staff with little or no knowledge of dogs.
Every Borough, City and District council in the United Kingdom has a statutory duty to have a designated person who deals with stray dogs. The actual person at a particular council may be the Chief Environmental Health Officer, a Director or even the Chief Executive.
The high ranking officer will possibly never see a dog and will most certainly not be patrolling the streets of their council area promoting responsible dog ownership. That work falls on the actual Dog Warden, Dog Control Officer or Animal Welfare Officer, the job title is irrelevant but it is assumed and hoped that the officer is competently trained to handle dogs and is knowledgeable of [...]

Parliamentary Working Group to Investigate Pedigree Dogs Welfare
The Associate Parliamentary Group for Animal Welfare is forming a working group on the welfare of pedigree dogs following the controversial BBC documentary shown in August ‘Pedigree Dogs Exposed.’ The documentary highlighted the serious issues arising from genetic diseases owing to decades of inbreeding which has affected show dogs and domestic pets.
Eric Martlew MP, Chairman of APGAW stated;
“I’m delighted that the Associate Parliamentary Group for Animal Welfare has decided to
respond positively to the issues raised by the documentary and welfare organisations. It is extremely important that we establish what health and welfare implications there are on pedigree dogs bred to certain set standards and then have informed and considered recommendations in place to ensure their future welfare which can be presented in a report to the Secretary of State.
I’m really pleased that this working group is supported by all the APGAW officers, who [...]

Well, here we are. It’s 2008 and we’ve had a total of 17 years to evaluate the effectiveness of Lord Baker’s personally endorsed canine legislation: The Dangerous Dogs Act. So, how well has it been working?
Well here’s a bit of an insight: A couple of weeks ago I was asked to do an interview for BBC’s The One Show (to be broadcast Monday 10th November, 7.00pm) regarding the DDA - specifically BSL (breed specific legislation) - only there was a bit of a problem. The makers of the show wanted/needed someone to put forward ‘the other side’ i.e the case for BSL within the DDA. Nobody would step forward. They tried every avenue. The govt, the police, the original legislator - not a single person could they find who was willing to appear on camera and give a glowing endorsement for this highly derided piece of legislation. Quite telling.
But it’s [...]
